Contemporary British Silversmiths builds international reputation

RAUNI HIGSON

Chair 2014 - 2017

Rauni Higson is a leading British silversmith, known for distinctive sculptural tableware, contemporary designs created using traditional silversmithing techniques, principally created by forging and hammer-forming sheet silver. She set up her studio in the dramatic landscape of Snowdonia 20 years ago, after training in Finland, her mother’s native country. Commissions include 6 pieces in the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection, the National Museum of Wales, Liverpool Met Cathedral, The Worshipful Company of Clothworkers, and The Worshipful Company of Weavers and many more.

"During my time as Chair of Contemporary British Silversmiths, our biggest project was Silver Speaks, a celebrating 20 years of the association with a year-long programme of exhibitions, events, demonstrations and conversations designed to show how silver can enhance contemporary life.

In addition, the idea for the Skills Training Programme began to take shape, and subsequently became my focus. The voluntary pilot course took place in my workshop in 2016 taught by Tony Bedford, where we tested ideas and models for silversmithing skills transfer.

I was persuaded into standing for Chair by Clive Burr and Jules Chamberlain, who said she had done it not because it would be easy, but because it would be hard, and a valuable learning experience. It certainly was that! I am proud of what we achieved elevating the profile and engaging a much wider audience in the living art and craft of the contemporary silversmith."
